About the department
The science department has 10 teaching staff all skilled in a range of scientific disciplines allowing our students to receive the very best in Biology, Chemistry and Physics teaching. The faculty has 10 well equipped laboratories, most with interactive whiteboards and mobile fume cupboards. We are well stocked with scientific apparatus and our team of four technicians ensure that practical work is regular, safe and fully engages the learner.
We pride ourselves on the number of enrichment activities that occur within the faculty. We plan regular trips to the Natural History Museum, the National Space Centre, Think Tank museum, Oxford University History of Science Museum and Science Live events at prestigious universities to name just a few. We have hosted fingerprint specialists for our forensics enrichment days, have hatched baby chicks, had the RAF deliver a science themed workshop as well as hosting visitors and feathered friends from an owl sanctuary and a university lecturer from Leeds university to discuss primordial slime!
With a number of GCSE option routes through science, students enjoy their science lessons immensely and develop a comprehensive understanding of just how science works in the world beyond the classroom.
“I am among those who think that science has great beauty. A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician: he is also a child placed before natural phenomena which impress him like a fairy tale.” Marie Curie
