Our Physical Education curriculum at The Duston School is both broad and interesting as we are constantly trying to allow our students the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities.
Students in Year 10 and 11 continue to work on activities in unit blocks and spend time addressing 4 the Key Strands which are promoted through Physical Education.:
- Acquiring and Developing skills
- Selecting and Applying skills and tactics
- Evaluating and Improving
- Knowledge and Understanding of Fitness and Health
Subject content
In years 10 and 11 students will participate in a range of activities including the more ‘traditional’ PE activities including Football, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Athletics, Basketball, Gymnastics, Dance, Swimming and Health Related Fitness. In addition we have introduced the Sports Leaders Leaders Award into the programme so that students have increased opportunity to work together and build on the important skills of Leadership and independent learning. During this Key Stage pupils will continue to build and improve on the activities listed above, both from a practical point of view but also improving in the 4 Key Strands.
'Pathways'
Importantly, we recognise that, as students develop and progress through the school they are able to take increased responsibility for their own learning and have more diverse ideas regarding physical activity. With this in mind we have introduced a programme involving ‘Pathways’ where students can choose a suite of activities tailored to their personal preferences.
Programmes of Study
The PE programmes in Key Stage 4 are constantly being revised in the light of developments in the curriculum area. Students will usually spend a half term working on a particular ‘unit’ with associated skills. Then students have the opportunity to assess their performance and department staff track students’ progress through teacher assessments which feed into short and long reports to parents. The current programmes of study for each year group in Key stage 4 can be viewed below.
GCSE Physical Education in Years 9/10/11
The Physical Education Department has introduced the accredited GCSE Physical Education qualification for all students in Year 9. A broad programme is followed with students being assessed in each activity. The best two practical grades carry forward which, combined with marks from the terminal theory examination, generate their overall grade.
Extension Work
All pupils have the opportunity to join after school clubs, which are excellent vehicles for promoting social, moral and spiritual development, outside of the 'classroom environment'. We try to offer a range many team sports including Football, Netball, Rugby, Rounders and Cricket but also individual sports such as, Dance, Gymnastics, Trampolining, Cross Country Running and Tennis.
Enrichment activities are also used to enhance the pupil's knowledge and understanding of PE by focusing on Analysis of Performance within the sports we cover. By doing this it provides the students with the skills necessary to coach themselves and each other in order to improve their performances.
The PE enrichment days are extremely popular with the students and although each form is competitive during the matches they all demonstrate excellent sportsmanship throughout.
