Physical Education

Welcome to the home page of The Duston School Physical Education Department.

At The Duston school students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting and recreational activities but most importantly they acquire skills to help lead a healthy and active lifestyle which will benefit them as they move through life.

About the Department

The PE Department at The Duston school is well equipped with two dedicated indoor areas; a Sportshall and Gymnasium with a discreet classroom for theory based work and a purpose built Performing Arts Centre for Dance.

The department has access to the swimming pool as part of the School site and utilise the large outdoor playing surfaces afforded by the playing fields. Additionally we have two hard areas for tennis and Netball. Our outdoor space has been augmented by a floodlit Astroturf pitch incorporating the latest ‘rubber crumb’ surface.

The Department is staffed by five full time PE teachers, one part time PE teachers and supported other staff and older students of the school who lead extra-curricular activities.

Aims of the Physical Education Department

  • To encourage students to develop physically and acquire the highest possible level of attainment in the skills and techniques which form part of the P.E curriculum.
  • To provide a variety of opportunities, both competitive and non-competitive in which students can enjoy the experience and achieve success.
  • To promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and encourage students to have an understanding of their body, its capabilities and needs.
  • To encourage students to use leisure time positively and constructively and make them aware of opportunities through both the school and community curriculum.

Standards

It is our expectation that all students attend school fully equipped and ready to learn. In the case of Physical Education it is vital that students attend with full PE kit. This should include any safety equipment that is specific to the activity being undertaken, for example; gum shields for Rugby and Hockey and shin pads for Football.
If a student is unable to take a full active part in a lesson due to illness or injury they are still expected to take part in the lesson in some way, through officiating or coaching other students within the group. In order to do this effectively we still expect them to bring full PE kit to change into.

Sportsmark 2007

In 2007 the school once again received the prestigious Sportsmark Award, recognising the provision of high quality Physical Education at the Duston school. The school met the criteria of over 90% of pupils having access to 2 hours of PE in curriculum time.
We are now working towards the ‘5 hour offer’ which is the next government initiative. All pupils will have access to 2 hours in the curriculum with an additional hour provided by the extra-curricular clubs at school. The final 2 hours will be provided by the increasing links with community clubs in the local area.
Congratulations to everyone involved in gaining this prestigious award and the ongoing work to develop Physical Education and School Sport at Duston.
