Key Stage 5

At KS5 we offer GCSE Drama and Theatre Studies and BTEC National Level 3 in Performing Arts. Both of these course run for a total of 2 years.

BTEC National Level 3 Performing Arts

Edexcel’s BTEC National in performing arts is a qualification that is designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding
and skills that they need to prepare them for working in the sector. This BTEC National consists of 5
core units. These are:

  • Performance Workshop
  • Performing Arts Business
  • The Historical Context of Performance
  • Rehearsing for Performance
  • Performing to an Audience

As well as this, specialist units will be chosen to make up a total of 1080 guided learning hours to complete the two year qualification. On completion of the course students will either be awarded a pass, merit or distinction.

As well as the core units, some of the other units that are being studied in 2009/2010 are the following:

  • Dance Improvisation
  • Musical Theatre
  • Developing the Voice for the Actor

AS/A2 Drama and Theatre Studies

AS Level

At AS Level students will complete two sets of explanation notes which will come from 2 plays that will be studied in depth. There will be continued focus on non verbal communication, language and characterisation. For their exam piece they will perform a scripted play along with either a monologue or a duologue.

A Level

The skills they developed at AS Level will now be put further into practise through devised work in the second year. They will create their own devised piece of work which will then be performed.

The study of Dr Faustus will then go towards a 2 1/2 written exam which will make up 30% of their final grade. They are assessed on their knowledge of the production requirements and the historical context in which it was originally performed. Regular theatre visits are an essential part of the course.

Coursework Requirements

As a department we run coursework sessions after school for students to voice any concerns or have support in areas they are struggling in. We encourage students to attend these sessions so we can help them fulfil their potential. Log books and written coursework will be an element in both the BTEC National and A Level Drama so it is important that commitment is shown in keeping up to date with all the work that is set. It is also extremely important that coursework deadlines are met as overall grades will be affected if coursework is handed in late or not handed in at all.
