Key Stage 3

At KS3 year 7 and year 8 students are set in ability groups and have two lessons in drama every fortnight. At this age we introduce students to what drama is, including skills such as performance. Everyone is given the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular theatre trips, which we hope will raise enthusiasm and awareness at KS3, as well as introducing them to the theatre experience (see trips page).

Year 7

The emphasis in year 7 is on the development of group skills and basic performance technique.

In the first term the students have been introduced to warm up games, trust exercises and simple acting styles such as mime and physical theatre. Presenting their work to the rest of the class will also help build on their self confidence. Over terms 2 and 3 students will be introduced to the genre of melodrama as well as focus on script work, which will enable them to experiment with a variety of theatrical styles. They will be developing their performance and characterisation skills throughout.

The following units are studied:

  • Serious Fun
  • Melodrama
  • Charlotte Dymond - An introduction to devision
  • Performing Shakespeare
  • Devising

Year 8

The emphasis in year 8 is on the development of performance skills and a widening of the students dramatic experience. They will begin to work with a wider range of theatrical skills, doing performances for the camera as well as studying theatre practitioners and devising from a given stimulus. Focus continues on heightening performance skills.

The following units are studied:

  • Silent Movies
  • Holocaust - Stimulus for devised material
  • Brecht - Theatre Practitioner
  • Crime Scheme
  • John Godber - Theatre Practitioner
  • Testle Masks
