At The Duston school students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of physical and recreational activities but most importantly they acquire skills to help lead a healthy and active lifestyle which will benefit them as they move through life.
About the Department
The Dance Department at The Duston school is well equipped with a purpose built Performing Arts Centre. The Department is staffed by one full time PE teacher and supported by a Performing Artist in Residence, and older students of the school who lead Dance clubs.
Aims of the Department
- To encourage students to develop creatively and expressively, and acquire the highest possible level of attainment in the skills and techniques of Dance.
- To provide a variety of opportunities, through curricular and extra-curricular activity in which students can enjoy the experience and achieve success.
- To promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and encourage students to have an understanding of their body, its capabilities and needs.
- To encourage students to use leisure time positively and constructively and make them aware of opportunities through both the school and community curriculum.
Standards
It is our expectation that all students attend school fully equipped and ready to learn. In the case of Dance it is vital that students attend with full PE kit. If a student is unable to take a full active part in a lesson due to illness or injury they are still expected to take part in the lesson in some way, through passive choreography and observation/feedback to other students within the group. In order to do this effectively we still expect them to bring full PE kit to change into.
Provision
KS3 Dance – in Year 7 and 8 is delivered in core PE lessons.
Examination Dance – in Years 9, 10, 11 is delivered as a discreet subject.
