GCSE Graphic Products

Throughout this intensive GCSE course, students are given the opportunity to experience and understand graphics in relation to a design, make and test approach. The selection and presentation of information is used to solve specific problems during the production of a major project completed during lessons and homework time throughout the first four terms.

Different areas are studied within Graphic Products, which wherever possible are related to contemporary industrial practice. During their studies, students learn and experience a wide range of appropriate techniques. The following areas are likely to be included:

  • Modelling
  • Technical Drawing
  • Pictorial Drawing Systems
  • Presentation Techniques
  • Geometrical Construction
  • Information Graphics
  • Design Sketching
  • The use of Information Technology

Final GCSE Assessment consists of only two components:

  • Major Graphics Design Project (60%)
  • End of Course Examination (40%)

The Major Project (60%) is one substantial task resulting in a detailed design folder and a graphic product or outcome. The end of course examination (40% total) consists of two papers:

  • Paper 1 contains general questions relating to Design and Technology
  • Paper 2 contains questions relating specifically to Graphic Products

Early on in the course students are given the opportunity to produce two ‘mini’ Graphics projects. Estimated grades for the Examination Board are based on performance during this time. As such, it is important that students aim to achieve the very best standards of which they are capable right from the beginning of the course.
