Primary Links

Liaison with our feeder primaries takes place on a regular basis to ensure a smooth transition. Year 6 students visit the faculty during the summer term to undertake a focussed practical task. Faculty staff also help out in the feeder school to help introduce themselves. Last year the Year 6 students designed and made puppets and next summer we plan to undertake a rocket building and launch activity.

Lower School

In Years 7 and 8 all students experience Art and Technology subjects on a rotation to ensure full materials coverage. All students are able to achieve a ‘Licence to Cook’ qualification by the end of Year 8 in catering.

GSCE Course

Students opt in Year 9 to undertake full GCSE courses in Art, Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, Catering and Textiles Technology. See separate subject links for further details. Go here for an overview of the specification from the examination board in Resistant Materials.

Post 16

At this level students can choose to study for A/S and A2 examinations in Art, Product Design and Textiles. Go to here for an overview of the specification from the examination board in Art; here for Product Design and here for Textiles.

The Art, Design and Technology facilities have been put to excellent use providing a platform for exciting and innovative work leading to a high level of staff and student expectation and resulting in outstanding achievement, with success in local and national competitions. A laser cutter and sublimation printer are amongst the most recently purchased items of equipment and these are further enhancing the practical outcomes for large numbers of our students.

Opportunities to enhance students’ design thinking and to make them aware of opportunities in the world of Art, Design and Technology beyond school include:

  • Visits and presentations by Art and Design practitiones
  • Input from industrial partners

Homework Arrangements

Years 7 and 8

Students in Years 7 and 8 have separate Art, Design and Technology lessons every week. Sometimes their Design teachers may set a short task to complete, rather than one longer homework. Tasks will vary from subject to subject, for example students may have ingredients to prepare for Catering, research into a particular material for Textiles, a ‘finding out’ task for Resistant Materials or a sustained design homework project over several weeks for Graphics.

Years 9, 10 and 11

Students in these years have selected a specialist are to study at GCSE level. During lessons, students will be prepared for the new 60% Controlled Assessment Task (CAT) and the 40% examination. All homeworks will be targeted at developing increasingly specialist knowledge and understanding of their chosen subject. During the first few months of the course the homework tasks will be specifically targeted at producing the folder work for their major project. When projects are complete, students will be expected to follow a demanding revision homework programme in preparation for the final GCSE examination in the summer.

Post 16

All students on Post 16 courses within the faculty should undertake at least four hours’ homework each week.
